Johan de Meij's first symphony (The Lord of the Rings) is based on the trilogy of the same name by J.R.R. Tolkien. The fifth movement, Hobbits, sketches the carefree character of the Hobbits in a cheerful folk dance, the following anthem radiates the determination and nobility of the Hobbit people. The symphony is concluded peacefully and resigned, in accordance with the symbolic atmosphere of the last chapter, The Grey Harbours, in which Frodo and Gandalf sail away on a white ship and slowly disappear behind the horizon. Paul Lavender skilfully arranged these two themes from De Meij's first symphony.
