Johan Nijs

 

The Belgian composer Johan Nijs was born on 11 June 1963 in Leuven. At the age 10 he started his studies at the various music academies. He obtained diplomas for the instruments clarinet, saxophone, piano and accordion, but also for (concert) band, solfège and chamber music. He studied at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels where he obtained diplomas for solfège, practical band, band, counterpoint, concert band and fanfare band conducting, music history, transposition, clarinet and piano. He also plays the flute and organ. From the age of 16 he started composing and won several (international) composition competitions. Currently Johan Nijs is active as composer and arranger, performing as jury member and guest conductor. He was a clarinettist at the Royal Music Chapel of the Belgian Air Force for more than 30 years and retired there in 2019. His most important teachers and examples are André Waignein and Jan Segers.
